Formula & Theory — Dynasty Year Finder
The Dynasty Year Finder uses a curated chronological database of Chinese dynasties. Duration is calculated as:
$$ \text{Duration} = \text{End Year} - \text{Start Year (CE)} $$
For BCE dates, the tool converts to a signed integer (negative = BCE), so the Qin Dynasty (221 BCE – 206 BCE) has a duration of 15 years. The Dynasty Year Finder performs a linear scan over the sorted dynasty table to find overlapping year ranges.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Start | First year of the dynasty (CE or BCE) |
| End | Last year of the dynasty (CE or BCE) |
| Duration | End − Start in years |
| Capital | Primary seat of government |
| Founder | First emperor or founding figure |
Overlapping Periods
Some periods overlap (e.g. Eastern Zhou coexists with the Spring & Autumn and Warring States eras). The Dynasty Year Finder returns the most specific matching entry for a given year.
