How to Use Gas Calculator
The Gas Calculator provides two modes to fit different situations.
Meter Reading Mode:
- Select your gas unit — choose m³, kWh, or therm to match your bill.
- Enter meter readings — type your previous and current meter readings. The Gas Calculator finds the difference automatically.
- Enter unit price — add your gas tariff per unit. The Gas Calculator shows total consumption and the amount due.
Estimate Mode:
- Enter appliance power — input your boiler, cooker, or heater power in kW.
- Set daily usage and days — enter how many hours per day and for how many days the Gas Calculator should estimate.
- View projected costs — the Gas Calculator returns estimated usage, total cost, average daily cost, and average monthly cost.
Formula & Theory — Gas Calculator
The Gas Calculator uses straightforward arithmetic for all calculations.
Meter Reading Method
Usage = Current Reading − Previous Reading
Total Cost = Usage × Unit Price
Daily Cost = Total Cost ÷ Number of Days
Estimation Method
Energy (kWh) = Power (kW) × Daily Hours × Days
Usage (m³) = Energy (kWh) ÷ Calorific Value (kWh/m³)
Total Cost = Usage × Unit Price
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Calorific Value | Energy content of gas per unit; the Gas Calculator uses 10.55 kWh/m³ |
| 1 therm | ≈ 29.3 kWh |
Assumptions
The Gas Calculator applies standard average calorific values. Your actual gas supplier may use a slightly different value depending on gas composition and pressure. For precise billing, always refer to your official gas bill.
Use Cases for Gas Calculator
The Gas Calculator is helpful in many everyday and commercial situations:
- Monthly Budget Tracking — Enter your meter readings each month and let the Gas Calculator show exactly how much you owe before the bill arrives.
- Cooking Cost Estimation — Estimate how much gas your stove or oven uses per month with the Gas Calculator's estimation mode.
- Water Heater Cost — Find the annual running cost of a gas water heater by entering rated power, daily usage hours, and your tariff.
- Central Heating — Calculate seasonal heating costs by entering your boiler's output and average daily run time into the Gas Calculator.
- Landlord & Tenant Splitting — Use the Gas Calculator to fairly split shared gas bills based on appliance usage.
- Energy Efficiency Comparison — Compare gas vs electricity costs for the same appliance by running both through the Gas Calculator and an electricity cost calculator side by side.
The Gas Calculator helps households and businesses stay on top of energy expenses and make smarter decisions about gas usage.
