Computing Horsepower from Torque and RPM
The Horsepower Calculator uses the SAE torque–power formula:
hp = Torque (lb-ft) × RPM / 5252
kW = Torque (N·m) × RPM / 9549.3
The constant 5252 comes from dividing 33,000 ft-lbf/min (the definition of one horsepower) by 2π. When you input torque in N·m, the Horsepower Calculator first converts to lb-ft before applying the formula.
Assumptions and Limitations
The Horsepower Calculator computes theoretical power at a single operating point. Real-world engine power also depends on factors such as friction losses, volumetric efficiency, and ambient conditions.
