Formula & Theory — TV Size Calculator

The TV Size Calculator is based on the relationship between viewing distance and the horizontal field of view subtended by the screen.

Recommended size range:

Ideal diagonal (in) = Viewing distance (in) ÷ 1.5
Minimum diagonal (in) = Viewing distance (in) ÷ 2.0
Maximum diagonal (in) = Viewing distance (in) ÷ 1.1

Physical screen dimensions:

Width  = Diagonal × Aspect_W / sqrt(Aspect_W² + Aspect_H²)
Height = Diagonal × Aspect_H / sqrt(Aspect_W² + Aspect_H²)
Reference Viewing Angle Typical Use
÷ 2.0 (min) ~28° Comfortable minimum
÷ 1.5 (ideal) ~35° Balanced, immersive
÷ 1.1 (max) ~50° Cinematic, very immersive

The THX standard recommends a 40° horizontal viewing angle for cinema-like immersion. The SMPTE standard for reference monitors is 30°. The TV Size Calculator uses 35° as the default ideal — a practical middle ground for living rooms.

Use Cases for TV Size Calculator

The TV Size Calculator is useful for a wide range of home and commercial display planning scenarios:

  • Living room setup — determine whether a 55-inch, 65-inch, or 75-inch TV best fits your sofa-to-wall distance before buying.
  • Bedroom TV — smaller rooms often have viewing distances of 6–8 feet; the TV Size Calculator confirms whether a 43-inch or 50-inch TV will feel right.
  • Home theater — plan a dedicated cinema room with a precise distance-to-size ratio to achieve a true theatrical field of view.
  • Office and conference rooms — calculate the minimum screen size for a presentation display visible from the back row.
  • Commercial installations — bar, restaurant, or gym operators use the TV Size Calculator to size multiple screens for good visibility from all seating areas.
  • Upgrade planning — if you already own a TV, use the TV Size Calculator to check whether upgrading from 55 inches to 65 inches will noticeably improve immersion at your current seating distance.

The TV Size Calculator takes the guesswork out of screen sizing, ensuring your next TV purchase perfectly fits your space and viewing habits.

Frequently asked questions about TV Size Calculator

How does the TV Size Calculator recommend a TV size?

The TV Size Calculator uses the widely accepted formula: recommended diagonal ≈ viewing distance (inches) ÷ 1.5 for an ideal ~30-degree field of view. The comfortable range spans from distance ÷ 2.0 (minimum) to distance ÷ 1.1 (maximum).

How far should I sit from a 65-inch TV?

For a 65-inch TV, the TV Size Calculator recommends sitting between 5.9 ft (minimum) and 10.8 ft (maximum), with an ideal distance of about 8.1 ft (2.5 m) for a balanced viewing experience.

What TV size is right for a 10-foot viewing distance?

At 10 feet (120 inches), the TV Size Calculator suggests a size between 60 and 109 inches, with 80 inches as the ideal. In practice, a 75-inch or 85-inch TV would suit this distance well.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations happen in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Does the TV Size Calculator account for 4K resolution?

The optimal viewing distance formula used in the TV Size Calculator is based on the viewing angle, which applies regardless of resolution. However, higher-resolution TVs (4K) can be viewed from closer distances without visible pixelation, so the minimum distance may be slightly shorter in practice.
