How to Use Bed Size Calculator
The Bed Size Calculator checks a mattress or bed frame against the room envelope and reports whether the walkway is comfortable, tight or not workable. It is intended for layout planning before buying a mattress, frame, nightstands or a complete bedroom set.
- Enter room dimensions — length and width in inches or centimeters.
- Pick a bed type — Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King or custom.
- Add side and foot gaps — defaults are 24 in / 30 in.
- Read fit status — OK, tight or does not fit.
- Tweak the bed type until a comfortable layout fits.
Formula & Theory — Bed Size Calculator
The Bed Size Calculator places the bed length along the room length and centers the bed across the room width. It then compares the remaining clearance with comfort thresholds used for walking, making the bed and opening drawers.
sideGap = (roomWidth - bedWidth) / 2
footGap = roomLength - bedLength
comfortable = sideGap ≥ 18 in AND footGap ≥ 24 in
tight = sideGap ≥ 6 in AND footGap ≥ 12 in
Assumptions and Limits
The result describes the bed footprint only. If the frame is wider than the mattress, enter the frame size as a custom bed. If nightstands, wardrobes or radiators sit beside the bed, subtract that space from the room width or include it in the custom width.
Use Cases for Bed Size Calculator
The Bed Size Calculator is useful for:
- Mattress upgrades — Check whether a Queen-to-King upgrade still leaves a walkway.
- Guest rooms — Balance a bed, desk and storage in a small footprint.
- Rental staging — Choose a bed that photographs well without blocking movement.
- Hotel-style planning — Compare standard bed sizes across repeated room layouts.
When the result is tight, a narrower frame or wall-mounted nightstands often solve the layout better than shrinking the mattress.
