How to Use the Chocobo Color Calculator
The Chocobo Color Calculator is designed for Final Fantasy XIV players who want to change their Chocobo’s feather color without guesswork. Select your Chocobo’s current color and the color you want to achieve, and the Chocobo Color Calculator instantly shows which fruits to buy and how many of each you need.
- Select Current Color — Search for or choose the color your Chocobo currently has. The Chocobo Color Calculator shows a color preview swatch alongside each option so you can confirm the right shade.
- Select Target Color — Search for and select the color you want your Chocobo to become. The preview panel updates immediately so you can compare both colors side by side.
- Read the Fruit Plan — The Chocobo Color Calculator displays the total number of fruits needed and a breakdown by fruit type with quantity multipliers. Each fruit is labeled with its in-game name.
- Feed Your Chocobo — Purchase the listed fruits from the Moogle House vendor or Sagolii Desert area, stable your Chocobo, and feed the fruits in any order. The color change takes effect after the next rest period.
For best results, let your Chocobo rest in the stable between feeding sessions to check progress before committing all fruits at once.
Formula & Theory — Chocobo Color Calculator
The Chocobo Color Calculator is based on the community-documented color shift system for FFXIV Chocobo dyeing. Each fruit shifts the Chocobo’s internal RGB color value by a fixed amount per feeding:
Xelphatol Apple: R +5, G −5, B −5
Mamook Pear: R −5, G −5, B +5
O'Ghomoro Berries: R −5, G +5, B −5
Doman Plum: R −5, G −5, B −5
Valfruit: R +5, G +5, B −5
Cieldalaes Pineapple: R −5, G +5, B +5
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| R | Red channel value (0–255) |
| G | Green channel value (0–255) |
| B | Blue channel value (0–255) |
| +5 / −5 | Shift applied to that channel per fruit fed |
The calculator converts your current and target colors into RGB coordinates from a lookup table of standard FFXIV Chocobo color swatches, then runs a greedy algorithm that at each step selects the fruit that brings the current color closest (by Euclidean distance in RGB space) to the target color.
Assumptions and Limits
Color values in this Chocobo Color Calculator are approximations based on community-documented data and may differ slightly from the exact in-game values stored by Square Enix. The greedy algorithm finds a good solution for most color pairs but may not always find the absolute minimum number of fruits. For very unusual color transitions, the result may require a few extra fruits compared to a theoretically optimal solution. The calculator assumes each channel is clamped to the range 0–255 so that values cannot wrap around or go negative.
Use Cases for the Chocobo Color Calculator
The Chocobo Color Calculator helps FFXIV players at every stage of the Chocobo dyeing process:
- First-time dyers — New players use the Chocobo Color Calculator to avoid the trial-and-error process of buying random fruits and ending up with an unwanted color.
- Returning to Desert Yellow — Because Desert Yellow is the Chocobo’s default color, players who want to reset their Chocobo’s color start by calculating how many Doman Plums and other fruits are needed to return to that baseline before applying a new dye plan.
- Targeting rare colors — Colors like Snow White and Jet Black require precise multi-fruit strategies that are difficult to work out manually. The Chocobo Color Calculator handles the math automatically.
- Minimizing fruit cost — Chocobo fruits can be expensive on the market board. The Chocobo Color Calculator helps you buy exactly what you need, reducing unnecessary spending.
- Planning for multiple Chocobos — If you manage Chocobos for multiple characters or Free Company members, the calculator lets you plan each dye job independently and total up the shopping list.
Whether you are chasing Snow White for aesthetics or matching your Chocobo to your glamour set, the Chocobo Color Calculator makes the dyeing process straightforward and cost-efficient.
