How to Use MME Calculator

  1. Select the opioid from the dropdown list.
  2. Enter the daily dose in milligrams using the same route and convention as the conversion factor.
  3. Review the calculated MME and the caution band shown by the calculator.

Formula & Theory - MME Calculator

MME Calculator uses this core formula:

MME = Opioid dose × Opioid-specific MME conversion factor

MME converts different opioid doses into a morphine-equivalent reference so total opioid exposure can be compared. Each drug has a conversion factor based on approximate analgesic potency, but equianalgesic conversion is clinically imperfect. Route, tolerance, incomplete cross-tolerance, patient age, organ function, concurrent sedatives, and pain context all matter. The calculator is a safety comparison tool and should not be used by itself to switch opioids or set prescriptions.

Use Cases for MME Calculator

  • Estimating total opioid exposure from a single opioid dose.
  • Checking whether a regimen enters a common caution or high-dose range.
  • Teaching why opioid conversions use drug-specific factors and still need clinical judgment.
