How to Use the Morse Code Decay Calculator
Enter Morse code using . for dots and - for dashes. Separate letters with spaces and words with / or wider spacing. Then enter dot duration, dash-to-dot ratio, measured gap, and word-gap ratio.
The calculator counts dots and dashes, estimates total transmission duration, and compares the measured gap with the ideal dot unit. Higher decay indicates more timing drift.
Formula and Method - Morse Code Decay Calculator
Decay index = |measured gap - dot duration| ÷ dot duration × 100%
Morse timing uses the dot as the base unit. A dash is commonly 3 dots, intra-character gaps are 1 dot, letter gaps are about 3 dots, and word gaps are about 7 dots. The calculator lets these ratios be adjusted.
Use Cases for the Morse Code Decay Calculator
- Checking timing consistency during keying practice.
- Estimating total duration for a recorded Morse message.
- Teaching how symbol and gap timing define transmission rhythm.
