How to Use Pace Calculator
The Pace Calculator offers three modes so you can solve for any unknown in the pace equation.
- Calculate Pace — Enter your total distance and finish time; the Pace Calculator returns your average pace per km or mi plus your average speed.
- Calculate Time — Enter your target distance and goal pace; the Pace Calculator estimates your finish time.
- Calculate Distance — Enter the time you plan to run and your target pace; the Pace Calculator tells you how far you can go.
Use the km / mi toggle to switch units at any time. Tap the race-distance shortcuts (5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon) to fill in standard distances instantly. The split-time table in Pace Calculator results shows cumulative times at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 km markers so you can plan your race strategy.
Formula & Theory — Pace Calculator
The Pace Calculator is built on one simple relationship:
Pace (min/unit) = Total Time (min) ÷ Distance (units)
Time = Pace × Distance
Distance = Time ÷ Pace
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km)
| Variable | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pace | Minutes per kilometre or mile |
| Time | Total elapsed time (h:mm:ss) |
| Distance | Race or training distance in km or mi |
| Speed | Average velocity in km/h or mph |
The Pace Calculator automatically converts between min/km, min/mi, km/h, and mph so you never need a separate converter. For split pacing, it multiplies your average pace by each checkpoint distance, assuming even-effort running — the ideal baseline before you adjust for hills or fatigue.
Even-Pace Assumption
The Pace Calculator assumes a constant pace throughout the activity. In reality, runners often negative-split (run the second half faster). Use the Pace Calculator's splits table as a baseline target, then adjust your race plan accordingly.
Use Cases for Pace Calculator
The Pace Calculator is useful in a variety of situations:
- Race-day planning — Determine exactly what pace to hold to hit your 5K, 10K, half-marathon, or marathon goal time.
- Training log review — After a workout, enter your GPS distance and elapsed time to find out your average pace with the Pace Calculator.
- Cycling and triathlon — Use the Pace Calculator in speed mode (km/h) to plan bike-leg targets for triathlons or gran fondos.
- Weight-loss running plans — Combine Pace Calculator results with calorie-burn estimators to design cardio sessions.
- Coaching and team sports — Coaches enter athlete times into the Pace Calculator to evaluate fitness benchmarks and set training zones.
Whether you are a first-time 5K runner or a seasoned marathoner chasing a personal best, the Pace Calculator gives you the numbers you need to train smart and race confidently.
