How to Use Roll Length Calculator
The Roll Length Calculator estimates the remaining or total length of a wound roll from outer diameter, core diameter and material thickness. It is useful when the roll cannot be unwound, counted or weighed reliably.
- Pick a unit — mm, cm or inches.
- Enter outer diameter of the full roll.
- Enter inner / core diameter.
- Enter material thickness — caliper or micrometer reading.
- Read total length in meters, centimeters, feet and inches.
Formula & Theory — Roll Length Calculator
The Roll Length Calculator treats the roll as an annulus. The annular cross-section area between the outer and inner diameters is divided by sheet thickness to estimate the strip length.
lengthMm = π × (outer² - inner²) / (4 × thickness)
lengthM = lengthMm / 1000
lengthFt = lengthMm / 304.8
Assumptions and Limits
Accuracy depends on uniform thickness and tight winding. Foam tape, fabric, embossed paper, telescoped rolls and rolls with air gaps can deviate more than smooth film or foil. Measure thickness under light pressure; over-compressing soft material can overstate the estimated length.
Use Cases for Roll Length Calculator
The Roll Length Calculator is useful for:
- Inventory checks — Estimate how much tape, label stock or film remains.
- Production planning — Confirm roll length before a print, slit or lamination run.
- Shipping estimates — Compare remaining roll length with order requirements.
- Quality checks — Spot rolls that are under-wound for their diameter.
For critical production runs, verify one sample roll by unwinding or weighing it against known basis weight.
