How to Use Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Calculator
- Enter the patient age in years.
- Enter the D-dimer value in ng/mL FEU or the unit convention your threshold uses.
- Review whether the value is above or below the age-adjusted threshold.
Formula & Theory - Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Calculator
Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Calculator uses this core formula:
Threshold = Age × 10 ng/mL for age > 50
Threshold = 500 ng/mL for age ≤ 50
D-dimer tends to rise with age, so a fixed 500 ng/mL cutoff can produce more false positives in older adults. The age-adjusted approach keeps 500 ng/mL for patients 50 or younger and uses age multiplied by 10 for patients older than 50. This adjustment is only intended for appropriate diagnostic pathways, usually after clinical probability assessment. It is not a stand-alone rule to diagnose or exclude thrombosis.
Use Cases for Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Calculator
- Checking an older adult’s D-dimer against the adjusted cutoff.
- Teaching why clinical probability must come before D-dimer interpretation.
- Reducing confusion when a value is above 500 but below the age-adjusted threshold.
