How to Use Aortic Valve Area Calculator
Use Aortic Valve Area Calculator with echocardiography measurements: LVOT diameter in centimeters, LVOT VTI, and aortic valve VTI. Enter all three values from the same study whenever possible.
The calculator reports LVOT area, VTI ratio, and AVA. If the AVA appears inconsistent with gradients or clinical findings, recheck LVOT diameter and Doppler alignment because these are common sources of error.
Formula & Theory - Aortic Valve Area Calculator
The core calculation is:
LVOT area = π × (LVOT diameter / 2)²
AVA = (LVOT area × LVOT VTI) / AoV VTI
The continuity equation assumes flow through the LVOT equals flow through the stenotic aortic valve. LVOT area multiplied by LVOT VTI estimates stroke volume through the outflow tract, and dividing by AoV VTI estimates valve area.
Because LVOT diameter is squared, rounding or off-axis measurement can shift the result. AVA should be interpreted with gradients, velocity, flow state, body size, and image quality.
Use Cases for Aortic Valve Area Calculator
Use it in echocardiography education, aortic stenosis review, or report verification when the required VTI and diameter measurements are available.
It helps explain why the same valve velocity may correspond to different valve areas depending on LVOT size and flow.
