How to Use Aquarium Calculator
Measure the internal length, width, and water height in centimeters, not just the outside glass dimensions. Enter the total adult body length of fish you plan to keep. The calculator returns water volume, a simple fish-density check, and a suggested filter flow around five tank volumes per hour.
Formula & Theory - Aquarium Calculator
The volume calculation uses centimeter dimensions and converts cubic centimeters to liters:
water volume (L) = length × width × height / 1000
fish density = total fish length / water volume
suggested filter flow ≈ water volume × 5 per hour
The simple stocking rule assumes about 1 liter of water for each centimeter of fish body length. The filter-flow suggestion uses a common turnover target of about five times the tank volume per hour. Both are starting points; messy species or heavily stocked tanks need more careful planning.
Use Cases for Aquarium Calculator
- Tank selection - Compare whether a planned tank has enough water volume.
- Stocking checks - Use the fish-length rule as an early overstocking warning.
- Filter sizing - Estimate pump flow before comparing real filter models.
Use the volume result before buying fish, then research the adult size and temperament of each species separately.
