How to Use DUDIT Calculator
The DUDIT Calculator is a front-end questionnaire calculator for totaling DUDIT responses. The calculator is designed for scoring an already-administered DUDIT form, where each item contributes 0 to 4 points.
Select the point value for each of the 11 DUDIT questions. The current implementation presents the score values directly so it can be used with a completed questionnaire. Select the recorded point value for each of the 11 questions. If you are administering the questionnaire, keep the original wording available separately.
The calculator returns a score out of 44 and maps it to a simple low, medium, or high risk band. Every item uses the same 0 to 4 range, and the maximum total is 44. Missing items should be resolved before using the risk band.
Formula & Theory - DUDIT Calculator
The DUDIT Calculator uses this formula or scoring rule:
DUDIT total = Sum of 11 item scores from 0 to 4
DUDIT is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Score thresholds can vary by population and setting, so a high score should lead to a qualified assessment rather than a standalone conclusion.
DUDIT results can support screening conversations, but thresholds are not universal. Age, setting, local practice, and the reason for screening can change what follow-up is appropriate.
Use Cases for DUDIT Calculator
The DUDIT Calculator is especially useful for:
- adding scores from a paper DUDIT form
- substance-use screening education
- checking score bands during counseling intake
- building examples for public health training
Use the total to check paperwork, teach scoring, or prepare a referral conversation. The score should lead to assessment, not replace it.
