How to Use Fabric Calculator

The Fabric Calculator is for sewists who need a quick estimate of how much fabric to purchase.

  1. Enter Finished Width and Length — The dimensions of the finished panel, garment piece, or quilt block.
  2. Enter Seam Allowance — Default is 1.5 cm / 5/8 in.
  3. Enter Bolt Width — Fabric store bolt width (cm or inches).
  4. Read the Result — The Fabric Calculator returns the total fabric width including seam allowance, total length needed, and total yardage / meterage to buy.

Formula & Theory — Fabric Calculator

total_width  = finished_width + 2 × seam_allowance
total_length = finished_length + 2 × seam_allowance
panels       = ceil(total_width ÷ bolt_width)
bolt_length  = panels × total_length
area         = total_width × total_length
SymbolMeaning
finished_widthWidth of finished panel
finished_lengthLength of finished panel
seam_allowanceAllowance added to each edge
bolt_widthFabric store bolt width
panelsNumber of bolt-width panels needed

Why the 2× Allowance?

A seam allowance is added on both edges (top + bottom, left + right). For a panel that needs to be hemmed only once, halve the calculation accordingly.

Frequently asked questions about Fabric Calculator

What does the Fabric Calculator output?

Total fabric width, total fabric length, square meters / yards, and bolt yardage. It also adds a configurable seam allowance to every edge.

How wide is bolt fabric usually?

Quilting cottons are typically 110 cm / 44 in. Dressmaking fabrics range 140-160 cm / 55-60 in. Upholstery fabric is often 137-150 cm. The Fabric Calculator takes any bolt width.

Should I add extra for pattern matching?

Yes. For directional or printed fabrics add a full pattern repeat per panel. The Fabric Calculator already includes seam allowance; add pattern repeat manually as needed.

Is my data stored?
