How to Use Gaokao Score Estimator
The Gaokao Score Estimator helps students and parents quickly estimate a total Gaokao score before the official results are released. The tool covers all major exam formats used across China.
- Select Exam Mode — Choose the format that matches your province: 3+1+2 (most provinces since the 2021 reform), 3+3 (Zhejiang and Shanghai), or traditional liberal arts/science comprehensive.
- Enter Core Subject Scores — Input your estimated scores for Chinese, Mathematics, and Foreign Language (each out of 150).
- Enter Elective Scores — For 3+1+2, select Physics or History as your first elective (out of 100) and enter two additional elective scores. For 3+3, enter three elective scores. For traditional modes, enter the combined liberal arts or science comprehensive score (out of 300).
- Set a Target Score (Optional) — Enter your target total to see how far you are from the goal.
- Read the Results — The Gaokao Score Estimator shows your estimated total, the subject breakdown with a progress bar, and three scenario estimates.
The Gaokao Score Estimator is useful for school review sessions, parent meetings, and personal study planning during the months before the exam.
Formula & Theory - Gaokao Score Estimator
The Gaokao Score Estimator calculates the total by summing subject scores according to the selected exam structure:
3+1+2 Total = Chinese + Math + English + FirstElective + Elective1 + Elective2
(max 150 + 150 + 150 + 100 + 100 + 100 = 750)
3+3 Total = Chinese + Math + English + Select1 + Select2 + Select3
(max 150 + 150 + 150 + 100 + 100 + 100 = 750)
Traditional = Chinese + Math + English + Comprehensive
(max 150 + 150 + 150 + 300 = 750)
| Scenario | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Conservative | Estimated Total × 0.95 |
| Normal | Estimated Total (as entered) |
| Optimistic | Estimated Total × 1.05, capped at 750 |
Assumptions and Limits
The Gaokao Score Estimator uses a simplified model. In provinces with the 等级赋分 (grade assignment) system, elective subject raw scores are converted to assigned scores before totaling; this tool accepts the assigned score directly. The ±5% scenario adjustment is a heuristic estimate and does not account for individual subject difficulty or official 赋分 fluctuations.
Use Cases for Gaokao Score Estimator
The Gaokao Score Estimator supports students and families across multiple planning stages:
- Pre-exam goal setting — Students use the Gaokao Score Estimator to set study targets for each subject and identify weak areas.
- Post-exam estimation — After the exam, students can enter recalled answers or predicted scores to estimate results before the official release.
- University selection planning — Comparing estimated totals against historical admission lines helps narrow down university and major choices.
- Parent communication — Parents use the Gaokao Score Estimator in school parent meetings to understand how subject combinations affect the total.
- Multiple scenario analysis — The conservative and optimistic scenarios help families plan for different outcomes simultaneously.
The Gaokao Score Estimator provides a fast, transparent estimate to support informed academic decisions, while always making clear that the official score, grade assignment rules, and provincial admission thresholds are the only authoritative figures.
