How to Use GVWR Calculator
The GVWR Calculator helps you load a truck, SUV, RV or van legally and safely. Compare the manufacturer total rating against your real-world cargo before pulling out of the driveway.
- Pick a unit — lb or kg.
- Enter GVWR — From the vehicle’s door-jamb sticker.
- Enter curb weight — Empty vehicle weight.
- Enter passenger, cargo and trailer tongue weights — Whatever you are actually carrying.
- Read the result panel — Remaining capacity (or over-by amount), payload capacity, current load, utilization and a status banner.
Formula & Theory - GVWR Calculator
The GVWR Calculator uses simple addition and subtraction:
Payload capacity = GVWR − curb_weight
Current total = curb + passengers + cargo + trailer_tongue
Remaining = GVWR − current_total
Utilization = current_total / GVWR × 100%
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| GVWR | Manufacturer maximum total weight |
| Curb | Empty vehicle weight |
| Trailer tongue | Vertical load from a trailer hitch |
Assumptions and Limits
The GVWR Calculator only checks the single total number. It does not verify per-axle limits (GAWR-F, GAWR-R), tire load index, or hitch class. Always weigh at a CAT scale for the most accurate validation.
Use Cases for GVWR Calculator
- Towing prep — Confirm payload after subtracting the tongue weight.
- RV trips — Account for water, propane and gear.
- Work trucks — Quickly check whether a load fits before pickup.
- DOT compliance — Provide simple math for fleet planning.
- Trade-in decisions — Compare cargo capacity across vehicles.
Use the GVWR Calculator as a fast paper check, and follow it up with a scale weigh-in for the most accurate result.
