Frequently asked questions about RMS Voltage Calculator

Does the conversion work for non-sinusoidal waveforms?

No. The Vrms = Vpeak/√2 identity is specific to pure sines. For squares, triangles or arbitrary signals integrate v(t)² over one full period.

Why use RMS instead of average?

The average of a sine wave is zero, but the RMS captures the heating capacity and the equivalent DC value, which is what power dissipation depends on.

What is Vpp?

Vpp = 2·Vpeak is the difference between the maximum and minimum value of the waveform — the metric oscilloscopes display by default.
