How to Use the Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment

Score each balance and gait item. Balance totals up to 16 points and includes sitting, rising, standing, turning, and sitting down. Gait totals up to 12 points and includes initiation, step length, symmetry, path, trunk, and stance.

The calculator sums balance and gait into a 28-point total. Scores below 19 suggest high fall risk, 19–23 moderate risk, and 24 or above lower risk.

Formula and Method - Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment

Tinetti total = balance score (max 16) + gait score (max 12)

Tinetti separates fall risk into postural control and walking quality. Low balance scores point to transfer or standing instability; low gait scores point to step, path, continuity, or trunk-control issues.

Use Cases for the Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment

  • Fall-risk assessment in geriatrics, rehabilitation, or nursing care.
  • Tracking improvement before and after physical therapy.
  • Planning walking supervision, assistive devices, or home safety changes.
