How to Use EPDS Calculator
The EPDS Calculator adds scores from ten Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale items. Select a score from 0 to 3 for each item. The calculator immediately sums the responses and displays a total score from 0 to 30 with a low, mild, or high risk prompt.
This page is designed for scoring support after the user has the EPDS item responses available. It does not replace the questionnaire wording, clinical follow-up, or safety assessment. The result panel includes a visual percentage bar and the scoring range so users can see where the total sits within the 30-point scale.
Postpartum mood symptoms deserve careful attention. An elevated score, worsening symptoms, inability to cope, or any self-harm thought should lead to prompt professional support. Screening is a doorway to help, not a final diagnosis.
Formula & Theory - EPDS Calculator
The EPDS Calculator uses:
EPDS total score = item 1 + item 2 + ... + item 10
Each item contributes:
0, 1, 2, or 3 points
The total range is:
0 to 30 points
The calculator groups results as:
0-9: low risk
10-12: mild risk prompt
13 or higher: high risk prompt
Use Cases for EPDS Calculator
The EPDS Calculator is useful for postpartum mental health education, screening workflow demonstrations, midwifery or nursing teaching, and quick scoring when item responses are already known.
Use it with empathy and care. EPDS results should be followed by appropriate conversation, safety review, and referral or treatment when indicated.
